Fox appointed to henhouse post

Saturday, July 26, 2008
Memphis City Attorney Elbert Jefferson is the city's chief ethics officer? Is this the same Elbert Jefferson who as a deputy city attorney had to be sued six times for delinquent real estate taxes? Full story »

Stop being a recycling polluter

Thursday, July 24, 2008
The future of the unmanned Agricenter public recycling drop-off center on Moore Road at Germantown Parkway is seriously threatened by individuals and businesses that leave cardboard, trash and other material on the ground around the containers, despite signs that clearly warn against such activity. Turf protection on the ballot

Wednesday, July 23, 2008
The Shelby County Commissioners are certainly looking after their own interests and not the voters', based on the way they have worded county charter changes on the ballot, especially regarding extending term limits for themselves. Full story »

We can win in Iraq, and still lose

Tuesday, July 22, 2008
As the rhetoric flies in anticipation of November's election, I am saddened that there has not been a comprehensive public debate on the true cost of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Instead it is framed in the simplest terms of either winning the war or ending the war. Full story »

In Memphis, perception is reality

Monday, July 21, 2008
Your July 11 letter ("Shell editorial hits discordant note") lamenting that "the perception of crime is now reality as we Memphians look upon each other with fear and mistrust" illustrates the core issue on the minds of most Memphians. The only disagreement I have with the writer's statement is that this is not a "perception problem"; it is hard, cold reality. Full story »

Shame on you for 'War and murder'

Sunday, July 20, 2008
I am appalled, deeply offended -- no, make that infuriated -- by your July 13 article "War and murder / Long before entering Iraq, the sergeant told his men they would take no prisoners in combat; in the fog of battle, his boast came true." Did you have fun with this disgraceful display? Full story »

Soldier's profile was incomplete

Saturday, July 19, 2008
I must take issue with your July 13 article concerning my son, Sgt. Michael Patton Williams. Your reporter painted a very untrue picture. He used only the prosecution's statements and documents. I, too, have thousands of documents, telling quite a different story. Full story »

Tell 'Hot Button' what you think about kids and exercise

Friday, July 18, 2008
E-mail your response to our question: Is ensuring that children and teenagers exercise regularly strictly a family responsibility, or should the schools take a more active role in encouraging physical activity? Full story »

Jealousy threatens 'The First 48'

Friday, July 18, 2008
As I watched the A&E show "The First 48" about the horrific events in a small house on Lester Street that transfixed Memphis earlier this year, I felt pride, anguish and frustration. The heroes in the Memphis Police Department's Homicide Division have a thankless job, and this program recognized their dedication and determination in solving the most heinous crimes. Full story »

City government's three-ring circus

Thursday, July 17, 2008
I was very disappointed to read your July 16 article about the city's countersuit against the school board ("Council counters by suing schools / Claims MCS owes city $152M, seeks to hold tax"). For me, this -- public institutions suing each other over the allocation of public money -- is the proverbial last straw. It is time for the school board members, the council, the mayor and his staff to don their big floppy shoes, put on their big red noses, gather together and in unison say, "I am dumber than any Memphis City Schools fifth-grader." Then they should get on a bus and leave town, nevermore to return. Full story »

Freedom comes with a very steep price

Wednesday, July 16, 2008
Your July 10 editorial "Kids in the cross hairs" asked what invention could have saved a local child who was shot to death after he and his half-brother found a loaded gun in the couch. We do not need any new inventions to prevent such tragedies. Full story »
